Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping
By Paco Underhill
This book changed my life. Paco Underhill is a behavioral scientist who has spent his life dedicated to using science and human behavior to help businesses. It’s particularly poignant if own a retail or bricks and mortar business, but is a great read for all business owners. -

The E-Myth: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It
by Michael E. Gerber
his is arguably the most fundamental book for any small business owner. Gerber's core idea is that most businesses are started by "Technicians" (e.g., a great mechanic starts a garage) who get trapped working in their business, not on it. He teaches you how to create systems and processes so the business can run without you. -

The Lean Startup
By Eric Ries
This book revolutionized how to build a business. Instead of a massive, perfect launch, it teaches a "build-measure-learn" feedback loop. You start with a "minimum viable product" (MVP), test it with real customers, get feedback, and adapt (or "pivot") quickly. It saves you from wasting time and money on an idea no one wants. -

Loosing my Virginity
By Richard Branson
A truly inspiring read for budding entrepreneurs. It covers his early start with Student magazine, growing the mail-order business into the first Virgin Records store, launching The Manor Studio (and signing Mike Oldfield), and the high-stakes gamble of starting Virgin Atlantic.

eCommerce/ Online Stores: Shopify
Hands down, when it comes to selling products, Shopify is the best eCommerce platform on the market. While its design flexibility for static pages can be limited, its power as a sales machine is unmatched.Shopify's native analytics are powerful, its integration with Google is second to none, and its built-in SEO is extremely strong, giving your products a significant edge in search rankings. It features a massive app ecosystem, expert support, and rock-solid security. It also brilliantly unifies your online and bricks-and-mortar POS sales into one system.
It's secure, scalable, and straightforward to learn. I use and recommend Shopify for all of my personal and clients' online stores.

Website / Service-Based Businesses: Squarespace
This is my go-to platform for service-based businesses and any company that needs a stunning, professional web presence without a focus on complex online sales.
Squarespace makes it incredibly quick to build a beautiful, mobile-responsive website. Its drag-and-drop editor is the best in the business, making it easy to use and simple to teach clients so they can manage their own text and image updates.
While it's not a powerhouse for online sales like Shopify, its SEO capabilities are still extremely strong, especially for service businesses and blogs. You get a secure, all-in-one platform that just works, looks incredible, and is perfect for showcasing a portfolio or professional services.

Business Operations & Email: Google Workspace
100% cloud-based engine for running a professional business. It's designed to connect to your existing domain name (which you purchase separately) and lets you use the power and familiarity of Gmail for your professional email (e.g., you@yourcompany.com).
This is a small cost that makes a massive difference in how seriously clients and partners take you.
Because it's all in the cloud, you are no longer tied to a single computer. You can securely access all your files, emails, and documents from any device (phone, laptop, tablet) with an internet connection.
Beyond just professional email, Google Workspace is your entire office suite:
Google Drive: Secure cloud storage that automatically syncs and backs up your work.
Google Docs, Sheets & Slides: Powerful tools for creating documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.
Gemini AI: Integrates Google's powerful AI (including models like Gemini Pro) directly into your apps to help you draft emails, summarize documents, and generate ideas.
Google Calendar: The best-in-class calendar for scheduling your time and meetings.
You can also share a document with a client or team member, and you can both edit the same file at the same time. It completely eliminates the chaos of emailing "Final_v2_Report_NEW.docx" back and forth. It's the secure, reliable, and central hub for your entire business.

Productivity & Ideation: Generative AI (Gemini & ChatGPT)
If you are a small business owner, you should be exploring generative AI. Tools like Google's Gemini and OpenAI's ChatGPT are massive productivity multipliers. They are not here to replace your strategic thinking, but to accelerate it and handle the grunt work.
I use them to help with:
Content Creation: Drafting social media posts, website copy, and newsletters.
Brainstorming: Generating 20 marketing ideas in 30 seconds.
Summarization: Condensing a 10-page report into key bullet points.
Problem-Solving: Acting as a "sounding board" for a new business idea.
You should always make sure you double-check the AI recommendations and outputs, but they are some of the most powerful business tools on the market today. The best way to grasp their power is to try them out for your business and start asking questions.
