The Challenge: Revolutionising Road Asset Management

Traditional road maintenance strategies across Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) have long been reactive, costly, and reliant on limited data, especially when it comes to the roading industry’s number one enemy, water. Government agencies and engineering firms faced significant challenges in accurately assessing sub-pavement moisture conditions, leading to inefficient maintenance scheduling, unmitigated risks, and inflated budgets.

The Solution: Integrating World-First Pavement Scanning Technology

As a strategic consultant, I helped spearhead the adoption and integration of a world-first, traffic-speed sub-pavement moisture scanning technology. My role extended beyond technical advice to encompass strategic business development, digital transformation, and operational design, helping clients shift from reactive repairs to proactive, data-driven asset management.

Core Strategic Contributions

  • Strategic Consultancy: Provided high-level advice to government and engineering design clients on optimizing road infrastructure across ANZ, demonstrating how to leverage this innovative technology to mitigate risk and drastically reduce long-term maintenance costs. In many cases I educated clients on the true costs and damage related to excessive moisture and lack of monitoring and management.

  • Technology Integration: Advised clients on embedding the new scanning technology and its data outputs directly into their existing asset management frameworks and decision-making processes.

  • Business Development: Developed and nurtured key strategic partnerships with government transport agencies, major engineering consultancies, and Tier 1 contractors.

  • Technical Sales & Communication: Presented and sold complex technical solutions to large audiences (20+) of senior engineers and asset managers from government departments and major construction firms, simplifying complex data into clear business value.

  • Data-Driven Decision Making: Enabled clients to use real-time, network-wide data for enhanced, proactive decision-making and intelligent resource allocation.

Broader Impact: From Digital Strategy to Operational Design

Beyond the core consultancy, I drove innovation and operational readiness across multiple facets of the business:

  • Digital Presence: Designed the new TDRI company website www.tdrisolutions.com, writing all copy and blocking out the user experience.

  • Value-Add Tools (Apps):

    • Conceptualized and designed an online Road Maintenance Budget Saving App to demonstrate clear ROI for potential clients.

    • Created a Road Scan Tracking App for internal use, allowing teams to check off scanned roads and log distances across large-scale roading networks.

  • Operational & Commercial Tools:

    • Developed a standardized Supplier Details Account Form to streamline submissions to client accounts departments.

    • Created a default Traffic Management Plan (TMP) tailored for scanning operations to ensure safety and compliance.

  • Product & Marketing Design:

    • Advised on the practical design and ergonomics of the trailer-drawn scanning unit.

    • Supplied graphics and designs for trade shows, product data sheets, and digital marketing resources.
